Electoral battles
A civil, substantive debate on economic policy turned contentious over national security Tuesday, as Republican presidential contenders sparred over America's role in the world and how to combat emerging threats. Front-runner Donald Trump and underdog Rand Paul lined up against U.S. intervention in the Middle East and elsewhere, arguing that Washington could neither fiscally afford, nor should it politically shoulder, the burden of robust military leadership overseas, as has been the tradition in the post World War II era. They argued against challenging Russian strongman Vladimir Putin in Eastern Europe and the Middle East and shied away from combating Chinese expansion in Asia.
