DAMASCUS, Dec. 21
(Xinhua) -- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday stressed his country's
resolve to eradicate terrorism, and called for national reconciliation across
the country, according to the state news agency SANA.
Assad made the remarks
during his meeting with the visiting the Iranian Parliament speaker, Ali
Larijani.
He said his
administration is determined to achieve "national reconciliations,"
which are basically local truces with the rebels in some opposition-held areas
in Syria.
Meanwhile, Larijani said
in a press conference following his meeting with Assad that Syria should be
supported against the rampant terrorism.
He said terrorism not
only threatens Syria but also other countries, adding that the international
community needs to stand by the side of the Syrian government and people.
"The subject of
terrorism doesn't only concern Syria, as there are a lot of countries in the
region which are engaged in confronting the terrorist groups and that is an
important point that should be considered and the Syrian government and people
should be supported," he said.
Meanwhile, the Iranian
official pointed out that many regional and Western countries have become more
aware of the menacing terrorism. He, however, noted that there are countries
that do not want a political solution in Syria.
The visit of Larijani
comes against the backdrop of diplomatic visits to Tehran by high-profile
Syrian officials.
Syrian Prime Minister
Wael al-Halqi visited Tehran last week and met with high-ranking officials of
the Iranian government on the need to expand the cooperation between the two
countries on all levels.
Iran has emerged as
Syria's main regional ally during the long-standing conflict in Syria. The
support of Tehran has so far enabled the Syrian administration to withstand
difficult times during the crunching crisis.
