The Department of Homeland Security is lagging in deployment of biometric measures at the nation’s borders but a number of programs are in the works, according to an assessment by the department inspector general.

The latest report reiterates issues identified in 2013, namely that congressionally-mandated programs to use biometric scanners to ensure foreign travelers exiting the country are the same people that entered and maintaining accurate data on travelers who overstay their visa have continually fallen behind schedule. Furthermore, DHS has failed to submit timely progress reports to Congress.
