Profitable neighborhood
St. Clair County officials
said Friday that they planned to give land near Scott Air Force Base to the
federal government to replace its National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s
western headquarters in St. Louis.
“My
recommendation would be that it is no cost to the federal government,” said
Mark Kern, the chairman of the St. Clair County Board.
The
agency is looking to move from its current facility near the Anheuser-Busch
brewery. It has named four potential locations in the St. Louis region,
including one in north St. Louis. City officials are fighting hard to keep the
agency within its borders.
The
agency, which provides mapping support for the U.S. military, employs 3,000
people. Its workforce brings in an estimated $2.4 million in annual earnings
tax to city coffers and has an average salary of $75,000.
