Profiling

Editorial: A kind of profiling that is needed

There were 27 people in Amarillo who lost their lives in traffic accidents last year.
Compared to recent national media-overblown reports of deadly illnesses such as Ebola (fewer than 10 people were quarantined in Amarillo from West Africa in January 2015 in order to be monitored for Ebola virus symptoms), the most dangerous thing most of us will ever come into contact with is a steering wheel and a gas pedal.
This is why Amarillo Police Department needs to use profiling as it relates to the enforcement of traffic laws.
Let us be clear - we are not referring to so-called “racial profiling.”
In this instance, profiling means having law enforcement put added emphasis on areas where data shows there is an preponderance of dangerous driving compared to other parts of the city.
