Why Is the US Still Spending Billions to Fund Mexico’s Corrupt Drug War?
Washington's
security assistance to Mexico is facing more criticism and scrutiny today than
at any time since the advent of the Mérida Initiative. The disappearance of the
Ayotzinapa students has heightened calls to cut off US funding. It is becoming
increasingly difficult for Washington to defend spending billions in support of
Mexico’s security apparatus in the face of growing evidence of federal-level
complicity and direct involvement in flagrant human rights violations.
