Trump Administration Provides New Evidence for a Saudi Connection to 9/11

The debate over what actually occurred on 9/11 and, more to the point, who might have been behind it, continues to preoccupy many observers worldwide. There is considerable legitimate concern that the commission that reviewed the incident engaged in a cover-up designed either to excuse a catastrophic failure on the part of the United States’ national security apparatus, or even connivance of federal agencies in the attack itself. And then there is the issue of possible foreign government involvement.

The roles of the Saudi Arabian, Israeli and Pakistani governments and security services has never been adequately investigated in spite of the fact that all three countries had clear involvement with the mostly Saudi individuals who have been identified as the attackers. Beyond that, Israel had intelligence operatives that appeared to be celebrating the fall of the twin towers in real time, an involvement in what took place that has never been comprehensively looked at by .law enforcement due to unwillingness to offend the Israelis.

It was Saudi Arabia which had the most sustained and personal contact with some of the alleged hijackers. For years, families of victims have been seeking to find out more about the possible Saudi role, admittedly so they can sue the Kingdom in US courts under existing anti-terrorism legislation that dates from 2016 and is referred to as the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act. The Act permits lawsuits in the US directed against any country whose government supports international terrorism...

Some of what we know about the CIA's pre-9/11 intelligence about the hijackers comes from a joint congressional inquiry several years after the attacks. But the most revealing information has come from former FBI agent Mark Rossini, who -- though an FBI agent -- was assigned to the CIA and prevented from sharing the information with his colleagues.

FBI re-releases 9/11 photos of Pentagon

Photos taken after the attack on the Pentagon on 11 September 2001 have reappeared on the FBI's website six years after they were first released.

The 27 images show fire crews battling the blaze, as well as recovery teams and investigators searching the rubble.

American Airlines Flight 77, travelling from Virginia to LA, slammed into the building at around 09:37 local time.

US authorities said the plane struck between the first and second floors of the Pentagon, killing 184 people.

It was previously thought that the images had been newly released because of the fresh date stamp.

Senators already eyeing changes to 9/11 bill after veto override

With Congress overriding President Obama for the first time, lawmakers in both parties are already eyeing changes to the law at the heart of the showdown.  

The Senate voted 97-1 to override the president's veto of the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA), but a bipartisan group of senators indicated Wednesday that they remain concerned about potential retaliation against Americans.  

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said lawmakers need to make sure they didn't open "Pandora's box" and reassure Saudi Arabia that Congress isn't "finding them guilty of 9/11." 

"I think the things we can do that would preserve the right to sue here in America ... but also minimize the exposure we have overseas," he added. "We need to think hard about how to modify this bill." 

Graham, who supported the veto override, estimated that approximately 20 senators currently support changing the bill, something he thinks could happen as soon as the end-of-year lame-duck session.

US House adopts ’Sue the Saudis’ 9/11 bill

The US House of Representatives has passed a bill allowing Americans to sue Saudi Arabia over 9/11, days before the attack’s 15th anniversary. The measure passed without objection or opposition, but the White House is threatening a veto.

House Resolution 3815, also known as the “Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act” or JASTA, creates an exception to sovereign immunity created by a 1976 law, thus allowing US citizens to sue foreign countries for terrorism that kills Americans on US soil. The law has been invoked to shield Saudi Arabia from lawsuits over the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Fifteen out of 19 men who hijacked commercial airliners and used them as missiles to target the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were subjects of the Saudi kingdom.

Behind the 28 Pages: Questions About an Alleged Saudi Spy and the CIA

The recently released “28 pages” are a snapshot in time. They came at the conclusion of the joint House-Senate Intelligence Committees' inquiry and before the 9/11 Commission started its work in 2003. Those pages and many others previously released posed questions for further investigation, based on the committees’ review of raw intelligence and FBI reports. The 9/11 Commission took the baton and followed up on most of those leads, but not all.

Among those dangling strands of the investigation, two stand out. The first, the subject of these 28 pages, is what role Saudi government officials played in supporting al-Qaeda and the 9/11 plot.

The second question, with which the 9/11 Commission struggled but was unable to answer, is why the CIA failed to tell the FBI and the White House when the agency knew about al-Qaeda terrorists in the United States.

The mystery surrounding 28 pages said to show links between 9/11 plotters and Saudi Arabia

Of the 19 hijackers who carried out the 9/11 attacks, 15 were from Saudi Arabia. They were all affiliated with al-Qaeda, the terrorist organization founded by Osama bin Laden, the scion of a wealthy and connected Saudi family. The Saudi royal family also has been accused of tolerating extremist clerics within the kingdom in exchange for domestic stability and political support.

After the attacks in 2001, these facts contributed to a widespread suspicion that Saudi Arabia, a U.S. ally for 70 years, had somehow aided the plotters, possibly with financing. However, when the 9/11 Commission released its final report on the attacks in 2004, it suggested only that the Saudi government had "turned a blind eye" to charities that funded the attack but was not directly involved.

Congress releases long-classified ‘28 pages’ on alleged Saudi ties to 9/11

Congress on Friday released 28 previously classified pages discussing potential connections between Saudi Arabia and the hijackers who carried out the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The House Intelligence Committee voted to reveal the pages, which are part of a larger 2002 investigation of the 9/11 attacks by the House and Senate intelligence committees. Their classification has proven controversial because of allegations that they contain information linking Saudi Arabia to the hijackers.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for their release, but the Obama administration has said it would do so only after careful review. Administration officials have also downplayed the significance of the information, noting that the 9/11 commission created by Congress thoroughly examined the issue and did not find evidence of a link between Saudi officials and the hijackers who staged the attacks on New York and Washington.

Newly Disclosed US Document Shows Possible Saudi Links to 9/11 Attacks

A new list of names that possibly links Saudi Arabia to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York and Washington has come to light, even as President Barack Obama weighs whether to release a still-secret 28-page report about Riyadh's alleged connection to the funding of the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.

The document, known as File 17, lists more than 30 names of people, most of them Saudis, who met with or talked with at least some of the hijackers who commandeered commercial jetliners and crashed them into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington. Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were Saudis.

A former U.S. senator, Bob Graham of Florida, who was co-chairman of the U.S. congressional inquiry into the 9/11 attacks, told the Associated Press that "much of the information" in File 17 was based on the 28-page report Obama is considering declassifying.

Graham believes the hijackers had an extensive Saudi support system in the United States before launching the attacks, saying that the secret 28-page segment of the massive official report on the attacks points "a very strong finger at Saudi Arabia as being the principal financier."

White House and intelligence officials are deciding whether to declassify 28 pages of a congressional investigation into the Sept. 11 attacks. The still-secret chapter could answer or raise new questions about possible Saudi links to the attackers.

The documents, kept in a secure room in the basement of the Capitol, contain information about possible sources of foreign support for some of the hijackers while they were in the United States.

Saudi Arabia: Framed for 9/11, Guilty of Fueling Hate

 ...The government in Riyadh represents a pact between the Saud royal family and a clerical establishment that promotes a corrosive and extreme version of Islam. And while the Saudis have improved dramatically in the last dozen years in regulating charities that were linked to al-Qaeda in the 1990s and terrorist financing in general, to this day Saudi Arabia promotes a kind of Islamic Supremacism that stokes an enmity of Jews, Christians, Shiites and "apostates."  

Evidence for this is ample. Consider the textbooks Saudi Arabia uses in its own classrooms. A 2006 diplomatic cable, published by WikiLeaks, indicated that an eighth-grade textbook says, "God will punish any Muslim who does not literally obey God just as God punished some Jews by turning them into pigs and monkeys.”

CIA chief: Missing report pages exonerate Saudi Arabia in 9/11 attacks

CIA chief John Brennan says that he believes 28 redacted pages of the 9/11 Commission report will soon be made public, and that they will prove that the government of Saudi Arabia had no involvement in the September 11 attacks.

The families of those killed in the attacks have long wanted the pages from the 2002 report -- officially titled the Joint Inquiry into Intelligence Community Activities before and after the Terrorist Attacks of September 11, 2001 -- made public.

There had been widespread speculation that these pages concern Saudi Arabia, its wealthy citizens and the financing of terrorist operations.

But whatever was actually contained in those 28 pages was ultimately redacted from the report, and the families have been waiting 14 years to read the government's conclusions.

Brennan, in an interview with the Saudi-owned al-Arabiya TV network, said that the pages were part of a "preliminary" joint inquiry that was published in 2002 -- just a year after 9/11. The inquiry at the time had tried to "pull together bits and pieces of information reporting about who was responsible for 9/11."

9/11 families plead with White House to release secret 28 pages

Twenty-one family members and survivors of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks wrote to the White House on Monday, pleading with President Obama to release 28 classified pages from a congressional report into the al Qaeda strike.

The advocates implored Obama not to waste any time releasing the secret portion of a 2003 report that is believed to contain details linking the government of Saudi Arabia to 9/11. 

“Not a single day of further delay can be justified,” the survivors and family members wrote.

The advocates urged the Obama administration to go above and beyond those 28 pages and offer more sweeping evidence connecting the Saudi kingdom with the 2001 terror attack.

The 28 pages should be “only a first step in responding to the public calls for transparency and accountability,” they wrote.

Agent who interrogated Abu Zubaydah: ‘Where we went wrong as a nation’

The FBI agent who first interrogated Abu Zubaydah — the war-on-terror captive who became the guinea pig in the CIA’s post- 9/11 interrogation program — said Wednesday that the case of the captive represents “the A to Z of where we went wrong as a nation.”

The Palestinian prisoner whose real name is Zayn al Abdeen Mohammed al Hussein, 45, is due at the war court Thursday afternoon to testify in the Sept. 11 case about a very narrow topic: Whether he can vouch for claims by an accused 9/11 plotter, Ramzi bin al Shibh, that somebody’s causing noises and vibrations in Guantánamo’s most clandestine prison, Camp 7. The two men are held there with 12 other former CIA “Black Site” captives.

September 11 suspect asks that U.S. judge step down, cites evidence destruction

The U.S. military judge overseeing the trial of the accused mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks should step down and the case should be scrapped because he effectively conspired with prosecutors to destroy evidence, defense lawyers said in a court filing.

The motion said Judge James Pohl, an Army colonel, and prosecutors had tainted the case against Pakistan-born Khalid Sheikh Mohammed by keeping defense lawyers from learning that the evidence had been destroyed.

The motion was filed on May 10 and recently cleared for release. It raises a potential hurdle in the slow-moving capital case against Mohammed and four others charged in the hijacked airliner attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, in which 3,000 people died.
