Saudi Arabia Slammed For Plans To Execute Man Convicted As A Teen

Saudi Arabia's plans to execute a young man who was sentenced to death in 2012, when he was a child offender, have this week led human rights advocates to condemn the Kingdom's justice system.

Ali al-Nimr was convicted at the age of 17 on charges relating to his involvement in Arab Spring protests, according to UN rights experts. 

“We call upon the Saudi authorities to ensure a fair retrial of Ali Mohammed al-Nimr, and to immediately halt the scheduled execution,” UN experts said on Tuesday. “We urge the Saudi authorities to establish a moratorium on the use of the death penalty, halt executions of persons convicted who were children at the time of the offense, and ensure a prompt and impartial investigation into all alleged acts of torture."

Beheading of 5 foreigners in Saudi Arabia triggers outcry from human rights campaigners

Human rights groups have condemned Saudi Arabia after the beheading of five foreigners this week. Experts warn 2015 will mark a dramatic increase in public executions, as 80 people have already been killed, compared to 88 in the whole of 2014. Despite mounting international criticism from foreign governments and human rights campaigners, Saudi Arabia has shown no willingness to end public executions. On Monday, a group of five men, sentenced to death for murder and theft, were publicly beheaded.

Next Tuesday, a lawyer will plead for a Cairo court to suspend the execution of six men, arguing that their death sentences were unconstitutional. The only trouble is, the defendants are already dead.
Since the coup that swept Muslim Brotherhood President Mohamed Morsi from power, hundreds of his supporters have been handed death sentences in a rash of mass trials. But until this month, only one had been carried out — against a man convicted of throwing another man off a roof.

Saudi Arabia Posts Online Job Listing for Executioners to Carry Out Public Beheadings

Finding a job, of any sort, online is pretty standard practice at this point, but on Monday Saudi Arabia took the quest for qualified candidates to a new, surreal levelwhen the Ministry of Civil Service's website posted job openings for eight executioners. Saudi Arabia prefers to carry out capital punishment by beheading, usually in public. And, you see, there’s been a pretty serious uptick in executions—the 85th execution of the year was carried out on Sunday, which nearly equals last year’s total in the Kingdom.

S. Korean Intelligence: N. Korean Dictator Kim Executes Defense Minister

South Korean intelligence is reporting that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had his defense minister executed for apparently falling asleep at a military event.Seoul's Yonhap News Agency quotes an intelligence official as saying Hyon Yong Chol, whose formal title was Minister of the People's Armed Forces, was shot to death by an anti-aircraft gun. Hundreds of officials watched Hyon's execution on April 30, Han Ki-beom, the deputy director of South Korea's National Intelligence Agency, told a parliamentary committee in Seoul Wednesday.
