Intelligence/ N. Korean asset
Leaked intelligence documents obtained
by Al Jazeera's Investigative Unit describe an effort by Britain's MI6 agency
to recruit a North Korean asset, offering him a "long term clandestine
relationship in return for payment".
A
cable marked "Secret UK/SA eyes only" shows that MI6, formally
referred to as the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), requested assistance from
South Africa's State Security Agency (SSA) to carry out "a joint
operation".
The
goal of the operation was to recruit a spy inside the opaque North Korean
decision-making system, and in order to succeed, MI6 needed South Africa's
help.
