Intelligence
A senior U.S. intelligence official said Tuesday the Obama administration had no backup plan if Congress didn’t reauthorize a law allowing the bulk collection of telephone records by its June expiration date.
The White House and many lawmakers want to create a new program that would limit intelligence officials to making narrow requests for information, replacing the current system under which the National Security Agency collects data on telephone calls spanning several years.
But if the new program isn’t authorized and the existing program expires, it is unclear how the government might obtain intelligence through telephone calls that they argue could prevent a future terrorist attack.
