Intelligence
spending: a taxpayer-funded sledgehammer to crack a few lone nuts?
"It is the
longstanding practice of the Australian government not to comment on specific
security or intelligence matters," an Attorney-General's Department
spokeswoman told us last month.
Which is, of course, complete piffle. Our government does not shy from
telling us why we should be more afraid of terrorists. Prime Minister Tony
Abbott gave a lengthy speech on the topic last week, telling us in detail what actions he was taking against the "terrorist
threat". Indeed, a couple of weeks earlier, he was so
specific in his comments about the alleged offences of two Sydney men he might well have destroyed any hope that they could be tried fairly
before a jury.
