The European Parliament wants changes in the Privacy Shield (pdf) deal reached in February between EU and the U.S. government negotiators that would replace the 15-year-old Safe Harbor framework to transfer Europeans' data to the United States.
The 15-year-old Safe Harbor framework was ruled invalid by the European Court of Justice in October 2014. U.S. and EU negotiators then worked to find a replacement for the framework, reaching the Privacy Shield deal in February of this year.
In announcing the agreement, the European Commission said that the "safeguards provided when data are transferred under the new EU-U.S. Privacy Shield are equivalent to data protection standards in the EU."
However, the European Parliament decided this week that EU officials must "fully implement" privacy recommendations and negotiate further changes to the deal.
