Asteroid threat/ The
closest one
A
gigantic asteroid safely flew past the Earth on Monday, with experts having
started a thorough examination of the space rock characteristics, the National
Geographic reports.
The asteroid, named 2004 BL86, soared
past our planet at 11:19 a.m. at a distance of 745,000 miles (1.2 million
kilometers), which is about three times the distance of the moon from the
Earth, according to the magazine.
The rock, which size is 984 feet (300
meters) across, did not pose any threat to people on Earth, but the distance at
which the it flew past our planet is considered the closest one until 2027,
when a giant Apollo asteroid is expected to soar particularly close to the
Earth.
