War on terror/ Launching
operations in their homelands
ISIS has officially formed a battalion of
English-speaking militants to target the West. The “Anwar al-Awlaki Battalion”
has been created for the sole purpose of carrying out attacks abroad using
fighters who have attended one of ISIS’ training camps.
It is named after the radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki,
who was killed by drone strikes in 2011 and remains hugely popular with
militants. ISIS has referenced al-Awlaki in propaganda videos. Militants
often share his photo and quotes on social media.
