World Humanitarian Day

Sharing humanity, strength and hope

Wednesday, August 19th, is World Humanitarian Day – a day to recognise the work done by humanitarian workers around the world and an opportunity to remember those who have given their lives in the service of humanitarian causes.

From Somalia to Burma, Haiti to Afghanistan, many of the world’s emergencies go largely unnoticed. Yet, year on year, humanitarian needs are outstripping the resources available to help tens of millions of people facing life-threatening crises. This year, the UN and its partners aim to reach 78.9 million of the world’s most vulnerable people with life-saving assistance. That’s nearly double the number from just 10 years ago.
