Spielberg’s Airtight “Bridge of Spies”
The story of Donovan’s defense of Abel—on whose behalf Donovan pleaded and practiced to the full extent of his ability and authority (which went far beyond the expectations of a mere pro forma representation) and who later negotiated the release of the American pilot Francis Gary Powers from the Soviet Union in exchange for Abel—is sufficiently fascinating in itself, from the splendid fusion of grand historical currents and high-tension intimate showdowns, that it would seem hardly to require a director of Spielberg’s talent to make it hum. But the wonder of the story is in surprising details that emerge from the fabric of the script and that Spielberg presses, subtly but unmistakably, to the foreground.
