French Attack Spotlights Issue of National Security in 2016 Campaign

Authorities investigate a truck after it plowed through Bastille Day revelers in the French resort city of Nice, France, Thursday, July 14, 2016...."We're living in a whole different world," Trump added. "There is no respect for law and order. There is no respect for anything or anybody. And this has to be dealt with very harshly." He said he would make it "very, very hard for people to come into our country" from "terrorist areas." Trump, who is set to accept the Republican presidential nomination at the GOP national convention next week, argued that President Barack Obama and Democratic presidential candidate Clinton are too lenient in allowing immigrants into the United States who might be terrorists. Clinton was Obama's secretary of state for four years.
In contrast, Clinton emphasized the need for "strong, tough diplomacy." She told Fox Thursday night the United States should do all it can to help France. "Events like this remind us how vital – vital – it is in every way not to abandon them," she said. "We need to strengthen our alliances, and I include NATO in that. We've got to do more to understand that this is a war against these terrorist groups." But she called it "a different kind of war. ... We've got to go after the headquarters ... take out their leadership, take out their infrastructure." One of her other proposals is to greatly expand the international sharing of intelligence about terrorists.
