Migrant surge peaks in Tyrol

Migrant surge peaks in Tyrol
The ministry, headed by Wolfgang Sobotka from the conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), said that from 1st January until 31st August 2016, 38,939 undocumented migrants as well as human traffickers were caught in Austria.

According to the database, most of the undocumented migrants entered the country in the mountainous western state of Tyrol, where 8,616 cases have been recorded.
The Alpine passes in Tyrol are an increasingly popular transit route for migrants who arrive in Italy after crossing the Mediterranean.

With Switzerland increasingly guarding their own border with Italy - which leaves thousands of migrants caught in Milan and Como - many try to find alternative ways to travel from Italy towards Western and Northern Europe.

After Tyrol, the north-eastern state of Lower Austria follows in second place with 7,066 cases, while the state of Burgenland which borders Hungary stood in third place with 5,831 recorded arrivals.
The biggest migrant group are the 10,080 people who came from Afghanistan, followed by 3,541 Syrians and 3,121 Pakistani. Also migrants from Nigeria, Iran, Iraq and Morocco increasingly found their way to the central European country.
