Hundreds of ‘Stingray’ Fake Cell Towers Spy on Unsuspecting Americans
A congressional report released Monday found that federal agencies have collectively spent close to $100 million on more than 400 cell-site simulators that secretly track mobile phone activity.
A House Oversight and Government Reform Committee report, "Law Enforcement Use of Cell-Site Simulation Technologies: Privacy Concerns and Recommendations," reveals the number of simulators owned by several agencies, commonly called by brand names "Hailstorm" and "Stingray", and recommends that legislation be put in place to standardize how local and state law enforcement use cellphone tracking technology.
