Argentine Military Searches for Missing Sub

Картинки по запросу ARA San JuanThree Argentine military aircraft and two ships were deployed Friday to search for a submarine that disappeared two days ago.

“We estimate that it must be on the surface because, under protocol, it has to surface to make conditions more favorable to be found,” navy spokesman Enrique Balbi told EFE.

The governments of Chile, the United States and Britain offered “logistical support and exchange of information” in aid of the search for the sub, the Argentine military said.

The ARA San Juan, carrying a crew of 44, set out Monday from the southern city of Ushuaia en route to its home port in Mar del Plata.

The sub last reported its position in the wee hours of Wednesday and the navy activated its search protocols after more than 12 hours spent trying to reach the vessel by radio, Balbi said.

He said the search area was roughly 430 miles east of the coast at a latitude south of the Valdes peninsula.
