The nuclear weapons debate in the United States can be deconstructed a variety of ways, characterized by competing schools of thought: What goals should (and should not) be served by the possession of nuclear weapons, and how should they be prioritized? Is nuclear disarmament even feasible? How do we measure the adequacy of US nuclear weapons to support accepted national goals? What is “deterrence stability,” and what is required to attain it?
