Donald Trump Cruises in New York
Donald Trump trampled his two opponents in the New York presidential primary Tuesday night, using his home state to reassert control of the Republican contest and keeping alive his hopes of clinching the nomination before the party's summer convention.
The New York billionaire was taking 60 percent of the vote to Ohio Gov. John Kasich's 25 percent with about 60 percent of precincts reporting. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, the most formidable threat to Trump, lagged in third place with 15 percent.
"I can think of nowhere that I'd rather have this victory," Trump said in a brief statement after the race was called, surrounded by supporters inside Trump Tower in Manhattan. "We love you all. We love New York, we love New York."
Trump's powerful performance in the Empire State stood to erase a sizable chunk of the delegate gains Cruz had made over the past month, and provides him with a new spurt of momentum at a time of considerable turmoil for his campaign.
