Strong military makes us great
We hear endless talk this political season about supporting a strong military so we can "make America great again." Unfortunately, the rhetoric focuses on troop strength, modern weapons and an aggressive posture to discourage competitors on the world stage.
What is entirely absent from these discussions is a historical perspective regarding the life cycle of strong nations and empires. A basic review of high school-level world history reminds us that most of these powerhouses did not meet their end due to attacks from hostile nations with military superiority. It was the inevitable result of chaos or decline from within.
The lesson for all of us is that the foundation of a strong and effective military is a cohesive society. Without that, nothing else matters. The end will come. It's only a question of time.
