UK Passes Broad And Sweeping New Counterterrorism Legislation

Since the attacks in
London on July 7 2005, around 40 terrorist plots have been disrupted in the
United Kingdom. There have been attempts to conduct marauding
"Mumbai-style" gun attacks on UK streets, blowing up the London Stock
Exchange, bringing down airliners, assassinating a British ambassador and
murdering members of the UK armed forces.
It's against this
backdrop that the British government introduced a sweeping new
Counter-Terrorism and Security Bill on November 26.
“The powers in the
Counter-Terrorism and Security Bill are essential to keep up with the very
serious and rapidly changing threats we face," Home Secretary Theresa May
said. "But it is also right that we make sure there is proper oversight
and scrutiny of those who use the sensitive powers granted by counterterrorism
legislation. That is why we have already acted in this Parliament to strengthen
the role and increase the resources available to the Intelligence and Security
Committee. And it is why the bill will also establish a new independent privacy
and civil liberties board to support the Independent Reviewer of Terrorism
Legislation, David Anderson QC”...
