FBI: North Korean government hacked Sony
BY BRIAN HUGHES | DECEMBER 19, 2014 | 12:02 PM
The FBI Friday said that the North Korean government was behind the hacking of Sony Pictures, the latest chapter in a simmering feud between Washington and Pyongyang over cyber warfare.
"The FBI now has enough information to conclude that the North Korean government is responsible for these actions," the law enforcement agency said.
The hack forced Sony to cancel the release of "The Interview," in the wake of terror threats made against theaters screening the feature. The movie was about a plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
"We are deeply concerned about the destructive nature of this attack on a private-sector entity and the ordinary citizens who worked there," the FBI added.
The FBI said that tools used by North Korea in the cyberattack were similar to those employed during a hack on South Korean banks in 2013.
The federal government has not outlined possible retaliation for the intrusion. President Obama is expected to address the matter during a year-end news conference Friday afternoon.
