Islamic
State (IS) militants have laid their hands on a 'dirty bomb' after stealing
40kg of uranium; the group is contemplating what might happen if the bomb went
off in public.
MOSCOW,
December 2 (Sputnik) – Islamic State (IS) militants claim they have constructed
a 'dirty bomb' after stealing 40kg of uranium from a university in Iraq, the
International Business Times said.
Militants
sent threatening messages on social media, describing the level of destruction
the bomb would cause if it was to be activated in London.
"O
by the way Islamic State does have a Dirty bomb. We found some Radio active
material from Mosul university," an IS fanatic identified as Hamayun
Tariq, known by his nickname Muslim-al-Britani twitted. "We'll find out
what dirty bombs are and what they do. We'll also discuss what might happen if
one actually went off in a public area".
Back
in July, Reuters reported that the IS had stolen nuclear materials kept at Mosul
University. "Terrorist groups have seized control of nuclear material at
the sites that came out of the control of the state," said Iraq's UN
Ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim, as quoted by Reuters. He also added that the
stolen materials could potentially be used to manufacture weapons of mass
destruction.
The
IS is a Sunni extremist group that now controls territories across Iraq and
Syria. The group is known for its active online propaganda campaign. According
to UN estimates, around 15,000 foreigners from more than 80 countries have gone
to Syria to join the IS militants.
