FAISALABAD: Two Pakistani convicted terrorists were reportedly executed in Faisalabad on Friday night. The executions come after Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted the moratorium on death penalty.

The two terrorists executed are Dr Usman and Arshad Mehmood.

According to a report in Pakistani newspaper Dawn, Usman, also known as Aqeel, a former soldier of the army's medical corps, was executed in relation to an attack on the headquarters of the Pakistan army in 2009 in Rawalpindi.

Arshad Mehmood, also known as Mehrban, was executed for an assassination attempt on former military dictator, Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf.

The two are among 17 terrorists who would be executed in the first phase after the end of self-imposed moratorium by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the wake of Tuesday's Peshawar school massacre.

Major private TV channels including Geo and Dunya TV reported that both Aqeel and Mehmood were hanged at about 9pm (local time) in Faisalabad jail.

Medical check-up of both militants was conducted and they were allowed to record their last will before executions.

No official was immediately available to comment on the executions.

Pakistani soldiers patrol outside the main gate of army headquarters during an encounter with militants in Rawalpindi on October 11, 2009. Usman was hanged for his involvement in the attack that left many people dead.

Earlier, a senior official said that Aqeel's family met him for the last time in Faisalabad jail where preparations were made to hang him as there was no legal hurdle to his execution.

Army chief General Raheel Sharif last night signed death warrants of six persons involved in terrorism against the armed forces.
