IS is a radical Sunni group also known as the
Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq
and the Levant (ISIL), which has been fighting the Syrian government
since 2012. In June 2014, the group extended its attacks to northern
parts of Iraq. Known for their brutal tactics, Islamic State
jihadists have seized vast areas in Iraq and neighboring Syria, declaring
an Islamic caliphate in the territories under their control.
An international coalition, led by the United
States, is currently carrying out airstrikes against the militants'
targets in both countries.
