Watchdog Agency Warns Of "Weaknesses" In Nuclear War Command Links


  The U.S. seeks to deter nuclear attacks by threatening retaliation-in-kind against any aggressor.  But there is more to having a credible retaliatory capability than operating long-range bombers and missiles; the military must also be able to exercise continuous command and control of its nuclear forces despite fearsome destruction. (Retrieved from Wikimedia)The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued a cryptic two-page report on June 15 stating that it had provided Congress with a secret briefing in April discussing “capability gaps and deficiencies” in the nuclear command and control network.  The network is designed to transmit attack instructions to U.S. strategic forces in the event of a nuclear war.
