Clothing Alerts About Air Pollution Levels
Living in a metropolitan city may have a wide array of advantages, however, it also poses a significant threat to the human health. Car fumes, industrialization and daily chores raise the amount of harmful particles in the air and in cities like Beijing and New Delhi pollution can even be seen in the form of a dense smog. In other urban areas the air pollution is not visible, thus a number, called the air quality index (AQI), is used by government agencies to communicate to the public how hazardous the air is.
This approach, however, is not able to show the exact condition of the air that one is currently breathing, which has led the American industrial designer Nikolas Bentel to think of a more obvious way to let people know when the air quality is not favorable. He created a line of shirts called "Aerochromics" which change their pattern when encountering air pollution.
